The Hairless Terrier is probably the newest breed we have in our world, it all started in 1972 when a little hairless female was born in a litter of medium sized rat terriers; she soon became the beloved pet of Willie and Edwin Scot, they lived in Louisiana and they named their new puppy, Josephine, even though they were fist time dog owners and even though they had never bred or raised puppies before they decided to try and reproduce the hairless dog. All scientist told them that it was not possible and that it would be silly to even try because everything would just end in failure.

This did not stop the Scot family however, and they went ahead and bred Josephine. In her very first litter they struck gold, a little female hairless terrier was born but she was to small to be bred…over the next several years Josephine was bred many more times never giving birth to another hairless pup, until 1981 when a little hairless female and a little hairless male were born…the Edwin bred these two to all their litter mates when they had reached a year old and that was the foundation stock for the wonderful little breed, named the American Hairless Terrier.

The hairless dog is a dog that loves to play and to dig, just because they do not have any hair does not mean that they do not have the energy of their furry cousins! Because of the hairlessness, they do need to be protected in hot and in cold weather, in cold weather there are all kinds of little jackets and such that you can buy for your little companion to keep him comfortable, in hot weather it is recommended that you put sunscreen on the little dog to prevent sunburn, it is also recommended that you use lotion on the American Hairless Terrier to keep his skin soft and in perfect condition. Bathing is really up to the owner but once to three times a week is what is recommended.

These are active little dogs so daily walks are a must, they are playful and affectionate, they do best with children when raised with them from puppyhood, they should not be used in hunting because of the fact that they do not have any protective hair. When they are outside they have the tendency to get into things and get themselves scratched and such, these should be treated with a little bit of peroxide or another antiseptic cream or agent, to prevent infection and to improve the healing process.

These dogs are easily trained and they are perfect for people who have allergy problems. It is indeed something for an allergic person to hold a dog for the first time in his life and not have a terrible allergic reaction to it! Always try to get a puppy form a breeder that has a good reputation in his area, try not to order over the internet unless you have had the opportunity to see the puppy yourself, be very careful when choosing a puppy because there are a lot of people out there that are in it only for the money.

These are dogs that have very little health problems and they will bring laughter and joy into the homes of the people who want to try out a different type of dog.

Dog Health Problems Symptoms

I am sure that all canine lovers will agree with the saying that ‘A Dog is Man’s Best Friend’. This best friend is prone to the same health issues that we humans suffer from like diabetes, cancer, depression along with other canine issues like kennel cough, heartworm.

In this article, I will cover the description, symptoms and treatment of some of the common canine diseases and health issues that you should be aware of if you have a dog at home.

Kennel Cough

When a dog is kept in poorly ventilated areas or is exposed to overcrowding, cigarette smoke or a large amount of dust in general, then their respiratory systems can develop an infection. This leads to a severe, dry hacking cough.

As a form of treatment, antibiotics can be used which are usually very effective in wiping out the disease successfully, but they can weaken the immune system considerably which can make them susceptible to long term complications. Vaccinations too are available which are a more popular method of treating the kennel cough but frequent vaccinations too can play havoc on the immune system of the dogs.

Heartworm

The Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) has been identified as a major, global pest that affects dogs, cats, wolves and foxes. A mosquito is the intermediate host for the larval stage of the heartworm which is known as microfilariae. The larvae are ingested by the mosquito when it bites an infected dog and deposits it in an uninfected dog when it bites it. The microfilariae are burrowed deep into the dogs and usually undergo several changes before reaching the adult form. Once they reach the adult form, they travel to the right side of the heart via a vein and then await the right time to reproduce. Adult heartworms can reach 12 inches in length and can survive in the heart’s of dogs for several years.

Detection of the presence of heartworm in a dog is a very simple process wherein the blood of the dog is tested for the presence of parasite. The infestation by the heartworm is very dangerous and the dogs that do not receive treatment die while dogs that do receive treatment early on go through weeks of discomfort while the worms are killed in their bodies and then expelled. The adult heartworms can be removed surgically in advanced cases.

Cushing’s Disease

The Cushing’s disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism is usually seen in older dogs. This condition is caused due to the excess production of hormones from the adrenal glands. The symptoms of the disease include increased appetite, thirst and urination, high blood pressure, panting, skin lumps, hair loss and nervous system disorders. The trigger point of this disease is either a tumor in the adrenal or the pituitary gland which can cause the adrenal gland to dysfunction and produce excessive hormones.

The Cushing’s disease can be diagnosed by a blood test. These tests can also indicate if the issue is with the adrenal or the pituitary gland. Several forms of medications are available that can be used to treat the disease if diagnosed early. These medicines have to be regulated very carefully.

Rabies

Rabies is a virus that can attack the nervous system and causes encephalitis. The virus is transmitted via the saliva from the bite of the animal that is already infected with the virus. The incubation period can vary anywhere between two to eight weeks. The three phases during the course of the disease are prodromal, furious and paralytic. Death of the infected animal occurs within seven days from the onset of the signs.

It is imperative that your pets (dogs and cats) be vaccinated against rabies as per the rules and regulations in your state. If your pet that has been vaccinated has been bitten by a wild animal or an animal known to be infected with rabies then the recommendation is that it should immediately be re-vaccinated and kept in quarantine for 90 days. However, if your pet has not been vaccinated then the pet should be euthanized and its tissue should be submitted for rabies testing. However, if you are not willing to euthanize the pet, then it should be quarantined for 6 months and vaccinated one month prior to its release.

If you are a little careful with your dog, then both of you can rely on each other for many years and develop a deep bond that will not be strained with any health issues.

Dogs suffer from various illnesses in a lifetime. Some are bacterial or viral in origin, while some are metabolic. Every disease in dog exhibits certain symptoms.

If you have a cuddly dog, you need to be very careful and alert about its health. It may suffer from various diseases and health problems. The dog can’t explain the symptoms of its illness. Common Dog Diseases

100-103 F is a normal temperature for the adult dogs, while 94-97 F is normal for the puppies. High temperature can be a sign of bacterial or viral infection. Bleeding gums or bad breath along with teeth loss or discolored teeth are the symptoms of periodontal disease. Increased thirst and urination frequency in dog are the symptoms of kidney disease, diabetes or liver disease. If your dog is suffering from the urinating problems, then it may possibly suffer from the kidney disease or kidney stones. Blood or worms in feces are the signs of bowel infection or parasite infestation. If your dog is ingesting grass or other vegetation or it is suffering from vomiting, then it may have the worm infestation or poisoning or gastrointestinal problems.

Itching or scratching can be the symptoms of skin allergies and skin infections. Diarrhea in dog indicates stress, Parvovirus, change in diet or Corona virus. The lumps are indicative of cyst, ulceration or tumor. Lameness in dog is due to injury or canine hip and elbow dysplasia. Pale gums and pale tongue are signs of shock. Watery eyes indicate allergies and in-grown eyelash. Sudden or dramatic weight loss indicates cancer, worm infestation or Cushing’s disease.

The symptoms of a sick dog help you understand the exact health problem of your dog, so that it can be treated earliest. If these symptoms persist for 24 hours or more, then you need to consult a veterinarian immediately in order to get appropriate treatment.
